WikiTalk Overview
Last Revised: March 21, 2008
We designed WikiTalk to make it easy to share news articles, web pages and other web content with WikiTalk users. We also included features which allow our users to post comments and rate other comments, helping provide users with interesting and relevant articles from all over the internet. In this Privacy Policy we refer to each combination of a title and description associated with an article, webpage or other web content as a “Topic” and comments on those Topics as a “Comment.”
We realized that you and other WikiTalk users may have particular like interests, so we also included the WikiTalk groups feature which allows WikiTalk users to share Topics and Comments among a defined group of WikiTalk users. We refer to each group as a “Group” in this Privacy Policy. WikiTalk Groups allow members of the Group to post Topics and Comments which, depending on the Group settings, may be available only to other members of the particular Group. Users can create their own Group, invite others to be a member of their Group or join another Group. You can manage your Groups and Group subscriptions by accessing your account settings.
To allow you to post Comments while you are viewing a Topic, we developed the WikiTalk Browser Add-on (the “Add-on”). To fully experience WikiTalk, you should download the Add-on. When you download and install the Add-on, you will need to agree to the Add-on End User License Agreement.
To post a Topic or Comment, we require that you create a user account with WikiTalk. Your use of WikiTalk is also subject to the WikiTalk Terms of Use.
WikiTalk's Privacy Policy
WikiTalk's Privacy Policy is designed to help you understand how we collect and use the personal information you decide to share, and help you make informed decisions when using WikiTalk and the Add-on (collectively, "WikiTalk").
By using or accessing WikiTalk, you are accepting the practices described in this Privacy Policy.
The Information We Collect
When you visit WikiTalk you provide us with two types of information: personal information you knowingly choose to disclose that is collected by us and website use information collected by us as you interact with WikiTalk.
When you register with WikiTalk, you provide us with certain personal information, which can include your screen name, your email address, your birth date and any other personal or preference information that you provide to us.
We store certain information from your browser using "cookies." A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user's computer tied to information about the user. We use session ID cookies to confirm that users are logged in. By default, we may use a persistent cookie that stores your login ID to make it easier for you to login when you come back to WikiTalk. If you elect for WikiTalk to remember you, WikiTalk may also store an encrypted version of your password in a cookie. You can remove or block cookies using the settings in your browser if you want to disable these convenience features.
When you use the WikiTalk website, we may collect certain information about your interactions with the website. For example, we may collect your Internet protocol address, browser type or viewed Topics. We may receive information about you from other sources, and this information may be added to the information we already have about you.
When you have the Add-on installed on your computer, the Add-on checks our servers to see if WikiTalk users have posted Topics and Comments on the webpage which you are viewing and to make sure you are not using an outdated version of the Add-on. These requests to our servers are anonymous, unless there is personal information in the URL. We do not retain these requests. If you are using an outdated version of the Add-on, you will be prompted to install the most recent version of the Add-on. The Add-on may also store your use information on your computer to improve its performance.
WikiTalk is about sharing Topics and Comments with others — naturally, the Topics and Comments posted by you can give people insight into your interests. Through WikiTalk Groups, you can limit with whom you share your Topics and Comments. Also, when you post a Topic or Comment, only your screen name will be visible to WikiTalk users or members of a particular Group. Please keep in mind that if you disclose personal information in your screen name, when posting Topics or Comments or when inviting others to join a Group, this information may become publicly available.
You post Topics and Comments on WikiTalk at your own risk. We cannot control the actions of other WikiTalk users with whom you may choose to share your Topics and Comments and other information. Therefore, we cannot and do not guarantee that Topics and Comments you post on WikiTalk will not be viewed by unauthorized persons or that an unauthorized person will not gain access to a Group. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained on WikiTalk. You understand and acknowledge that, even after removal, copies of Topics and Comments may remain viewable in cached and archived pages or if other users have copied or stored Topics or Comments posted by you.
Any improper collection or misuse of information provided on WikiTalk is a violation of the WikiTalk Terms of Use and Privacy Policy and should be reported to privacy@WikiTalk.com

We will automatically send that person an email inviting him or her to visit WikiTalk, view a Topic and/or join a Group. This email will include your screen name so that person knows who sent the message. WikiTalk stores this information to send this email and to track the success of our referral program. That person may contact us at info@WikiTalk.com to request that we remove this information from our database.

Use of Information Obtained by WikiTalk
When you register with WikiTalk, you must provide us with a screen name, password, your age and a valid email address. Your screen name is displayed to people using WikiTalk when you post a Topic or Comment, may appear in a list of most active or top rated WikiTalk users and other similar uses of your screen name. We may occasionally use your email address to send you notifications regarding new services offered by WikiTalk or select products and services offered by third parties that we think you may find valuable.
WikiTalk may use information in Topics, Comments or your profile or from your interactions with the WikiTalk website without identifying you as an individual to third parties. We do this for purposes such as aggregating how many people like a Topic and personalizing advertisements and promotions so that we can provide you WikiTalk. For example, if you post or view a Topic or Comment about a particular movie, we might serve you an advertisement highlighting a screening of a similar movie.
Sharing Your Information with Third Parties
We do not provide contact information to third party marketers without your permission. We share your information with third parties only in limited circumstances where we believe such sharing is 1) reasonably necessary to offer WikiTalk, 2) legally required or, 3) permitted by you. For example:
-
We may provide information to service providers to help us bring you the services we offer. Specifically, we may use third parties to facilitate our business, such as to host WikiTalk at a co-location facility for servers, to send out email updates about WikiTalk, to remove repetitive information from our user lists, to process payments for products or services, to offer an online job application process, or to provide search results or links (including sponsored links). In connection with these offerings and business operations, our service providers may have access to your personal information for use for a limited time in connection with these business activities. Where we utilize third parties for the processing of any personal information, we implement reasonable contractual and technical protections limiting the use of that information to the WikiTalk-specified purposes.
-
We may be required to disclose user information pursuant to lawful requests, such as subpoenas or court orders, or in compliance with applicable laws. We do not reveal information until we have a good faith belief that an information request by law enforcement or private litigants meets applicable legal standards. Additionally, we may share account or other information when we believe it is necessary to comply with law, to protect our interests or property, to prevent fraud or other illegal activity perpetrated through the WikiTalk service or using the WikiTalk name, or to prevent imminent bodily harm. This may include sharing information with other companies, lawyers, agents or government agencies.
-
We let you choose to share information with marketers or electronic commerce providers through sponsored Groups or other on-site offers.
-
If the ownership of all or substantially all of the WikiTalk business, or individual business units owned by WikiTalk’s parent, were to change, your user information may be transferred to the new owner so the service can continue operations. In any such transfer of information, your user information would remain subject to the promises made in this Privacy Policy.

In addition, WikiTalk will not and cannot censor or edit the content of any third-party site. By using WikiTalk, you expressly relieve WikiTalk from any and all liability arising from your use of any third-party website. Accordingly, we encourage you to be aware when you access third party websites and to read the terms and conditions and privacy policy of each other website that you visit. Third Party Advertising
Advertisements, if any, that appear on WikiTalk may be delivered (or "served") directly to users by third party advertisers. These third party advertisers, if any, will automatically receive your Internet protocol address when this happens and, may also download cookies to your computer, or use other technologies such as JavaScript and "web beacons" (also known as "1x1 gifs") to measure the effectiveness of advertisements and to personalize advertising content. Doing this enables the advertising network to recognize your computer each time they send you an advertisement in order to measure the effectiveness of their ads and to personalize advertising content. In this way, such third party advertisers may compile information about where individuals using your computer or browser saw certain advertisements and determine which advertisements are clicked. WikiTalk does not have access to or control of cookies that may be placed by such third party advertisers. Third party advertisers have no access to your information stored by WikiTalk unless you choose to share it with them.
This Privacy Policy covers the use of cookies by WikiTalk and does not cover the use of cookies or other tracking technologies by any of its advertisers.
